Here are the winners of the 2009 Flash Fiction contest at the Write Stuff Conference:

First Place Non-Fiction:

Kids Say The Darndest Things

by

Kellie Miller

For our family night we picked up two movies – one, a G-rated flick (“a kid movie”), and one rated PG-13 (“for adults only!”).

The following evening the pastor and his wife were our guests.  Over dinner we discussed everything from family to church politics.  The older three kids chimed in about school, friends, and our recent move.  Our three-year-old was quiet, feverishly thinking of something important to add.  Taking advantage of full mouths and remembering the fun we had had during our family time the night before, his little voice blurted out...  “Hey, we got adult movies!”

First Place Fiction:

SNAKE EYES

by

Jon Gibbs

“Weren’t you in jail?”

“I paid the fine.  Where’s my money?”

“Here.”

He snatched the bills from me, sifting through them with tattooed fingers.  “You’re $100 short.”

“It’s all I have.”

Across the table, his eyes narrowed.  “Then I guess it’s game over.”

I had money once, owned high-rent houses in sought-after locations.  Not anymore.  Now I teetered on the financial brink.

“Please,” I begged.  “I’m your father.”

After a tortured silence he whispered, “All right, old man, one last chance.”

I rolled the dice.

Snake eyes.

He smiled a triumphant smile.   “Boardwalk, with a hotel.  That’s $2,000.  I win.”

First Place Poetry:

Cave Exploring

by

Kellie Miller

Down, down, down we step

Into the mammoth cave.

Dark, damp, lone the halls

Like a long-forgotten grave.

Far, far, far we ride

On subterranean glass.

Gliding, riding, slowly sliding

Through the limestone pass.

River flowing.

No one rowing.

Stalactites growing.

Time ongoing.

On, on, on we tread

Deeper into the earth.

Walking, stepping, ducking down,

Plodding for all we’re worth.

Cold, cold, cold our frames

In the damp and musty air.

Iron ore, calcite, manganese, algae

Formations everywhere.

Echoes roaring.

Droplets pouring.

Never boring.

Cave exploring!
